About WZIP
WZIP-FM is a student-run radio station housed in the School of Communication at The University of Akron, serving both the campus and the surrounding community. WZIP is a co-curricular experience where students learn by doing, creating original programming that is broadcast over our airwaves.
Students complete half a semester of foundational and specialized training before fully participating in station operations. In return, they earn a graded credit hour and gain hands-on experience that prepares them for careers in media, communication, and beyond.
Our History and Programming
The radio station was first licensed to The University of Akron as WAUP in 1962. A request to change the call letters to WZIP was granted in 1989 to better coincide with university branding. WZIP, commonly known as Z88, generally follows a Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio format but also features alternative music on Sunday evenings, polkas and waltzes on Saturday mornings, and internally produced talk shows. The station also carries some syndicated public affairs shows.
Membership Information
Membership at WZIP-FM is open to any University of Akron student carrying at least 6 credit hours. You do not need to be a communication major. Students from all majors and backgrounds are encouraged to join!
Membership interest is collected during the first three to four weeks of each semester. A structured training program begins during the fifth week, and is typically held over three weekday evenings across a two-week period, or during a single weekend. After completing the initial training, students who choose to enroll select their areas of interest and continue with specialized training in those roles.
